Seminar on Food Security
South Asia has seen rapid economic growth and declining poverty, yet hunger rates remain high and in many parts are comparable to those in African countries such as Sudan and Ethiopia. The consequences of under-nutrition are severe - it constrains the cognitive and physical development of children, reduces human productivity and has adverse long-term impacts on poverty and economic growth. In the second seminar in a series organised by the Humanitarian Centre and hosted at Hughes Hall, academics from Cambridge and beyond came together with development practitioners and research students to discuss what has been dubbed the 'South Asian Enigma'. Presentation slides (PDF format): Steve Jones, the Humanitarian Centre: Undernutrition in South Asia: Overview Dr Mahabub Hossain, Executive Director, BRAC: Food Security in South Asia: a Situation Analysis Professor Nick Mascie-Taylor, University of Cambridge: Drivers of Undernutrition and Hunger in South Asia Professor Prakash Shetty, University of Southampton: Food Security in South Asia Links News article on Humanitarian Centre website Opinion piece in The Hindu |
